When your parents are starting to reach their elder years, life needs to be planned for. There are a bevy of topics which need plans in place: long term care, retirement, last will and testament, burial, insurance, etc. Most people dread this conversation and therefore never plan for their parents' needs.
At the THCA conference in October of 2010, I was the keynote speaker on the topic I speak about most: Parenting Your Parents. This is a story of my experience with my aging parents having made no plans or knowledge of what to plan for. As they needed elder care, and especially as they suffered from Alzheimer's and dementia, I started to learn that honesty might not always be the best policy.
