MP44? you mean the STG44? The Stoner design of the AR15 is inherently an inefficiant design for a gas system but it shoots fast moving bullets at a fast rate and in a controllable mannor that 308's can't achieve. Also, a 40 round mag of 5.56mm weighs less than a 20 round mag of 308 (7.62) so it tactically raises how much ammo you can carry

No...not really. The German Designers took the STG44 design to Spain after the war to create the CETME and then the Bundeswehr adopted the G3. Kalashnikov made a weapon with such loose tolerances that no german arms designer would ever make

Ballsy indeed. Yeah, the m16 is a PAIN to clean and disassemble..properly, the gas system gets fouled really quick. I don't know/care which rifle is best though, I'm not a gun expert or anything. I guess that if you clean it reguarly, the M-16 is an accurate and fun rifle, but again, it's a pain.
