It might not have been an active item. At least in my store, when we stop carrying an item, we are usually told to discard it. Sometimes we have a little fun and destroy it first. When its book,s we are told to destroy them. I have been told to rip all the pages out of a book then shred it.
At my staples we would be demolished for doing this to our recycles and returns.
