I am not sure about the etymology of the word, but MURKASH/MORKASH [MORGASH] is a town and a river in Chuvashia and nowadays also an administrative region of Chuvashia. The town of Morkash sits on a hill at the river of Morkash. Ethnically it is Chuvash, there are very few Russians and Tatars.

About Kubrat name. There is an old Babylonian title of Naramsin - SHAR KIBRAT ARBAI (Kubrat-Arbat) The meaning is - king of the four edge lands of the world. Kibrat=Ukraina=Ending land.
And the grandfather of Naramsin is named ITTIL Bel (together with God Bel)

"king of the four edge lands of the world" - it is very typical of the Chuvash to think the world has four corners, btw. In Chuvash ornament the world is represented by a square or rhombus.
