Anyway, all three leads were GREAT in the movie, and in terms of careers, Kate deserved ALL her Oscars, Jimmy deserved for this and should have won for It's a wonderful life and Cary should have definately won for Arsenic and Old Lace (yes, Arsenic and Old lace). I love them all, they're legends and icons.
Sorry about these long comments, and I know some of you might disagree with me, but I'm tired of people bashing Jimmy's performance.

My favorite movie of all time, it is just perfect, the performances, the plot, the witty dialogue. A true cinema gem.

i think the general view is actually that Clark Gable should have won for Gone with the Wind in 1939 actually..:o But for me, it was a ridiculously competitive years, with the masterful Olivier also in the mix. Personally, i think they got it right because Donat had to achieve something pretty remarkable in Chips: even now many struggle to successfully portray a man from his youth to his old age.

For the longest time, I actually bought the argument that Stewart was given the Oscar for this role because Robert Donat "stole" the one he should have won for "Mr Smith Goes To Washington" the year previously. Then, I actually watched this performance from beginning to end--he WON the Academy Award for this role and no mistake.

You're not imagining it. She says it pretty much before this scene when they're alone and he kisses her, right before they run off to go swimming.
