Garifuna Music from Belize to Brooklyn

The Garifuna people of Central America have an incredibly diverse and rich heritage. Descendants of Central and South Americans as well as West Africans, their cultural traditions show a variety of influences. As Central America, particularly Belize, continues to develop their tourism industry cultural traditions are harder and harder to maintain. Why? Because younger people are likely to be spending more hours away from their older family members who know and pass along the traditions. Music is playing a key role in keeping young people involved and interested. And that's not just the case in Central America, there are many thousands of Garifuna in New York City and Los Angeles. Perhaps through music this cultural gem can continue into the next generation.
