Joe's home in Gugulethu used to be a regular stop on the Cape Town Jazz Safari. His passion and knowledge about South African Jazz made him the perfect entry point before taking visitors to Hilton Schilder, Mac McKenzie or Robbie Jansen. Jazz Safari goers loved Joe for his humbleness and passion for Jazz. He didn't have a proper toilet in his house but owned more than 4 meters of vinyl from which he selected the early South African master pieces of Jazz such as the Jazz Epistles, Blue Notes or Dollar Brand records. While sipping on a Heineken the audience listened to his interesting stories. Usually, we had to drag people out of his shack. He could have easily filled the night. Sadly, he died in Feb 2009 and the Cape Town Jazz Safari has to carry on without him. But we miss Joe!
