A cinematographic diary by Wim Wenders, 1989.

"Fashion. I'll have nothing of it. At least that was my first reaction when the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris asked me to make a short film in the context of fashion.

The world of fashion. I'm interested in the world, not in fashion! But, maybe I was too quick to put down fashion. Why not look at it without prejudice? Why not examine it like any other industry, like the movies
for example?

Maybe fashion and cinema had something in common. And something else -- this film would
give me the opportunity to meet someone who had already aroused my curiosity, someone who worked in Tokyo [Fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto].

Filmmaking should just remain a way of life sometimes, like taking a walk, reading a newspaper, eating, writing notes, driving a car or shooting this film here, for instance, made from day to day, carried along by nothing other than its curiosity -- a notebook on cities and clothes."

  • (2) There is a considerably irresponsible feeling. As for liking Paris,,,, how should it have been said ...? It is in a mess somehow and likes "Do it without permission"(??) towns. I like that I walk the list which I like air in particular, and spicily chilly firm air always stabs with cheeks. When it is said where you like in a town, Paris and Tokyo are good.

  • @monta0076 Ahh thank you, much appreciated!

  • I don't understand what yohji says :( are there any subtitles?

  • @defo89 Hiya - good qusetion! My guess is Wenders intended to have Yohji speaking as himself, with as little mediation as possible - without subtitles. I've tried Googling info on it, but to no avail. So really it's a mystery to me.. I think I'll ask a friend to translate then post here soon :-)

  • I think "Do it without permission" was not collect.

”勝手にしやがれ” katteni shiyagare → let you go or leave me alone. something like that.

  • ※It might be wrong, but translated it for your information

5:20~ Generally, I like cities like all. I like rather "Tokyo men" than "japanese" oneself since I am born in Tokyo. Tokyo is town of unidentified nationality city, Japanese of our generation particularly in a city have an unidentified nationality. Human beings born in the city in particular have an unidentified sense and, It is very good.

  • Strange remarks on this video once again.

  • no subtitles for yohji?

  • in the xhibition, it was translated

  • thanks for the upload!
