  • overwhelming -- beethoven speaks directly via richter; it is sad, however, that there are those so afraid to experience the titanic emotional storm richter releases that they invent [with complete lack of self-awareness] various spurious criticisms of this definitive performance.

  • @freeunion Yes, this is a definitive performance indeed. What makes Richter stand out from others is that he never stopped exploring even if what he did meant crossing the limits of what some less adventurous people consider "acceptable".

  • In Moscow 1990 I've been to all of his 5 all-Bach concerts held in memory of Oleg Kogan, while bowing to applauding audience I approached Richter with flowers that I realized were full of thrones, the man beside me said "give it to him quickly, he doesn't fear thrones" Richter leaned forward saying " Oh, too many flowers" and grabbed them confidently nodding his head with a kind smile. That was the kind of man Richter was, never feared any thrones for the sake of utmost beauty !!

  • Students need a metronome. Real artists need real listeners !

  • Richter is like a poised tiger, ever ready to pounce on his prey. He is coiled up only to get completely unwound from time to time. His build-ups are tremendous, starting from a few bubbles in a cauldron to full blown volcanic excitement. ....he brings to life the full scope of the title of this work, "Appassionata".
