Kings Cross legend Edwin Duff still regularly wows the crowd at Australia's mythical jazz venue El Rocco in the X. He first performed at El Rocco in 1964 with Judy Bailey, having just returned from ten years in the United States, working mostly in New York City and in Motown where he appeared on WXYZ Detroit in the live TV Dance Party that set the format for American Bandstand. At the time, El Rocco was a leading Sydney cradle for avant garde music and nurtured emerging talents such as Joe be-bop Lane, Johnny Sangster, Serge Ermoll, David Levy and Bernie McGann.
Duff's singing career had started rather earlier, during World War Two at Leggett's gigantic ballroom in Melbourne. Aged ten, Duff was star vocalist with Leggett's big swing band. He also performed for Australian troops at The Dugout, the cellar beneath Walter Burley Griffin's fabulous Capitol Theatre in Swanston street. Moving to Sydney, Duff had a regular gig at Abe Saffron's infamous Roosevelt Club in Orwell street Kings Cross.
