Simple penetration and expansion test, using a form of wetpack plus layers of denim. This test is only a representation in a controlled environment. Please pursue and evaluate all possible resources when choosing a cartridge for self-defense.

I posted a non-denim test of this cartridge in May 2009; one of my early ammo test videos. The bullet from that test (without denim) is shown as a comparison in this video.

Test gun is a Glock 19, distance of 15 feet. Information regarding the testing media and process is mentioned in the video "Backyard Ballistic Testing."

    Never.

  • Is the HST a bonded bullet? That looks pretty impressive. I wonder how they are keeping pressures below +P levels and still obtaining that velocity. I also wonder what the velocity would be in a longer barrell, like a Browning Hi-Power, or a 1911 chambered in 9mm. Although, I do find that the Glock 19, even with it's "short" barrell is a fast 9mm. I think the rifling has a lot to do with that

  • @CHAINGUNMASSACRE

This box was not bonded, but I believe you can get those. These are some of the fastest 147's I've seen that are not so-called +P. I have some "+P" 147 Gold Dots from Georgia Arms, and the HST's are actually faster.

  • Question Please. I saw the Winchester Ranger +P test I am a little confused. Which of these are a better defensive load? How would you compare the two?

  • @EnduringEagle

It's a coin toss. I prefer the deeper penetration of the HST and recoil properties, plus the heavier bullet. Someone else might be fine with fast followup shots on the Winchester. The "light and fast" crowd might lean toward the Winchester. They are both good rounds, IMO. Not just these two rounds, but for all, the carrier needs to try some themselves if at all possible.

  • another question for you, out of all these tests what caliber and ammo do you prefer?

  • so do you think 10mm is overkill?

  • @tnoutdoors9 as it should be. even when the use of a gun is 100% justified, it changes the life of the shooter.

  • Can u do a video on hornady custom 9mm 147gr.?

  • First off id like to thank tnoutdoors9 for all the time and effort put forth to help us make educated decisions on out ammo.

Anyway, the if the consensus is that a heavier bullet weight, lets compare 9mm in 147 and 115, has LESS recoil and MORE penetration why would they make the 115 HP?

  • Beautiful. Thanks for the video

  • damn thats a badass camera

  • @jpap967 147gr will give you greater penetration, more inertia and you expand steadier in the material, but 124+p is STILL a superior round to many other labeled "self defense" so just thank god you went with a premium round such as the HST, but in the event you cant find the HST (as I cannot in 147gr) Winchster Ranger T's in a 147 or 124gr are a great way to go!

  • @tnoutdoors9 I agree, for the first time I shot some Federal HST 147+p, and they definetely had some pop, more so than any 147's I ever shot.
