The texts Philips uses are so often ones which have a special resonance for Catholics whose devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and whose commitment to a sacramental liturgy was under attack. Time and time again he uses extremely beautiful, emotionally-charged settings which are strongly related to Catholic spirituality. The Salve Regina is graphically and emotionally treated. The word 'clamamus' the exiled children of Eve, crying out, appears as the climax of a series of imitative entries while 'suspiramus' (we sigh) is punctuated by rests in an almost madrigalian depiction of the idea. The closing acclamations in the last part of the motet, O Clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria, are given loving treatment as a sign of devotion and reverence to the Blessed Virgin.

  • "I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word" Lk 1:38 Thank you Blessed Virgin Mary for your fiat to the will of God through the words of the the angel Gabriel, and for interceding on our behalf to our Lord Jesus Christ now and at the hour of our death..Amen ! Mater Dei ora pro nobis !

  • Mary....Pray for us sinners......

  • This is magnificent. I agree, Smithy, this Salve Regina is up there with Byrd and Palestrina. Says an ex-catholic, who surely won’t go back in the old faith, but who keeps loving good music.

  • Immaculate Mary mother of God, Please pray for us in ALL of our DIFFICULT time of NEEDS of LIFE, Almen and God Bless all on this Pg.

  • Salve Regina plays a great role all the times in our lives. Music is superb & has tones of an intensive prayer. I feel like someone seriously need help & almost desperately make petition to MOM with humility & hope. The sounds, that accompany the words, are vividly deploring of realities of our status in exile like we are pilgrims towards our real idealistic & better homeland.

  • A wonderful text for a wonderful music that touches the Heaven .... Mary

  • very good

  • If it were possible to fall in love with a song, this would be it.

  • Oh hell yeah, this is up there with Palestrina and Byrd. Fantastic.

  • Hauntingly beautiful music and choristry.

Old English translation is particularly appreciated.
