This is the quenching part of the heat-treatment process. The blade is covered with satanite refractory cement. The result should be a hard edge and a soft back, with a nice visible hamon (hardness line).

  • so you but the blade in the clay, heat it up, then but it in transmission fluid, mmm does dark motor oil work ?

  • @lalachris1000 It should work fine too. I suggest heating it up to 140F before quenching.

  • what did u make the clay out of ?

  • The clay is Satanite, a refractory type cement you mix with a bit of water..
