This behaviour has been going on since the early days of Hollywood. Look at Judy Garland: her movie studio would give her amphetamines for her weight and then put her to sleep with sedatives, Marilyn as well. Now, imagine being a performer on the road, you live in bubble and can't very well find a dealer everywhere that you go, so your management and handlers must provide what you need, including drugs.
