Performed by The Roma Trio

In 1957, Kurtag spent a year in Paris, attending classes of Messiaen and Milhaud as well as of art psychologist Marianne Stein. His Hommage à R. Sch. reflects upon the composer's affection for Robert Schumann's music, referencing the same instrumentation as Märchenerzählungen, or Fairy Tale Stories. The Fairy Tale Trio was one of Schumann's last works before the rapid deteroriation of his health- struggling with mania, depression, hallucinations, and a serious but unsuccessful suicide attempt. He struggled through his final two years alone in an asylum, dying when he was only forty-six.
