Ramsar Convention on Wetlands: The May 19, 2011 reception to celebrate international and national partnerships on the occasion of the Convention's 40th Anniversary. Originally created to preserve wetlands as a vital habitat for waterfowl, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands has inspired advances over the past 40 years in the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national action and international cooperation to sustain the diverse socio-economic benefits that wetlands deliver to people throughout the world. Today, the Ramsar community plans to use its 40th anniversary year to continue drawing attention to the wonders of wetlands and the urgent need to protect them.
