@BigBrit66 ...sponsorship? if you mean that sponsorship accounts for 50% of the cost of my can of caffeine, i can dig it. just like Coca-Cola and the NBA, or Anheiser-Busch and the NFL...we pay extra for advertisers to attempt to entertain us.
If you mean, however, that sponsorship covers 50-70% of the cost of the race, I would have to point out the obvious fact that it's a Red Bull-branded plane flying around in a race clearly sponsored by Red Bull (hence the naming rights).

@bustyouinthemouf....ever heard of sponsorship and licensing? that probably accounts for more than 50% dare I say 70% of the cost.

where do they set up the temporary airport? some empty parking lot?? some other airfield?

If possible, we use airfields/airports. If the airport is too far away, i.e. Monument Valley (2007), a temporary airfield needs to be built.

The 747's are chartered. Having own cargo aircraft wouldn't make sense from a financial POV
