New Flag of Ontario - Nouveau Drapeau pour l'Ontario

This video is meant to provoke opinions on the current flag of Ontario. The reason for this is that the flag does not accurately represent the diversity of Ontario : The current flag has a lot of British symbolism, which can be seen through the Red Ensign, and the Ontarian Emblem.
Canada's flag was once very similar, but it was changed to reflect the diversity of the nation. Why can't Ontario do the same?

And although it wasn't mentioned, it took 5+ minutes without looking to draw the Ontarian flag, although I had previously seen it. Asking a few random people to draw the flag on their own accord, revealed that they could basically only partially draw the Red Ensign part of the flag, but didn't know what the rest looked like. I recommend you ask unsuspecting people as well, and understand the inefficiency of the flag's design, compared to other provincial and territorial flags and the national flag.

You talk about diversity but these flags erase all traces of Britishness in favour of a Franco inspired flag. These ideas dont celebrate diversity only highlight a Frenchoriented minority. Surely the majority of the population deserve to have their cultural heritage respected too and what about other minorities that arent Francophiles? Do they not get a mention on the diversity flag? If you play the diversity card you have to respect diversity. Also your tricolour is the flag of Hungary.

No, the colors and the height of the bands aren't the same as Hungary, nor Tajikistan. The red portrayed in most of the examples comes directly from the Red Ensign, and in two other ones I use the Ontario shield of arms (in our current flag), and the Floral Emblem of Ontario (Trillium). Two of those are of British origin, the only French element is the lighter green colour. I'm also in favour of adding autochtonous elements, but unfortunately I don't do native art; or going for a neutral design

You people is very general, everyone has their own differing opinion on things. Renaming or getting rid of a Holiday is not the same as changing a flag; a flag is by definition a symbol used for communication, identification, and representation. Christmas is a religious holiday, not a means of communication, or directly identification and representation.

To appreciate the current flag for its historical meaning and affiliation with the British is fine, and a very valid argument. And no one has explicitely said they disagree with keeping the Britishness in the flag. People generally disagree for other reasons. Such as; like the other 100 flags exactly like it, it represents the British and their race to world conquest, not Ontarians. Look at British Columbia, it's still British, but with a more local touch.

I think the best design is the simplest one. The trillium on the white background. I agree that the Ontario flag seems like more of an out-dated appeasement than a true symbol. A flag should be instantly recognizable and easy to draw. For example, the flag of New Mexico.

It should be simple enough that any child can draw it. Ontario is surrounded by the Great Lakes to the south and Hudson Bay to the north. May I suggest looking at the prefecture flags of Japan; they are simple and beautiful. We really do deserve a flag of our own.

A while ago I designed my own flag for Ontario, a green trillium on a gold field. I like it, personally. Anyway, whatever the new flag is, it should include Ontarian symbols, such as the trillium.

@gnizleov Canadian soldiers fought under the Canadian red ensign because it was the best thing going at the time. That doesn't mean Ontario's flag should pay homage to that flag despite otherwise being of recognizably poor design.

This flag should be called the French Canadian Revenge flag, because instead of British symbols they are displaying French Imperial Symbols, there is no diversity within the Franco Ontario flag it is representative of French Canadians and the Ontario Red Ensign is representative of English Canadians. If Ontario must change its flag that Ontario's flag must represent Ontario and not one particular group, and if Ontario must change then so must Quebec for they too are guilty.

Just to add, as well as the affiliation with the UK is greatly awarded to the province's and the country's culture, there is a time where an independant nation has to grow out of its 'mother nation'. There is no liberalism or multi-culturalism involved in changing a flag, what the country needs is a unified way of representing its provinces. If you think that it all resides in the maintenance of the Union Jack, then you might reconsider how strong-willed you are towards keeping a unified nation.

The Green trillium has no affiliation with any specific culture and is a broad symbol of the province. In other words, it perfectly is representative without being discriminatory.

Most flags of the world have this same quality. If you start trying to represent every culture in a flag, you will never please anyone and will most likely end up with a mish-mashed flag.

More seriously:

- anything that includes a Maple Leaf is basically undrawable too. Try getting any Canadian who hasn't taken a professional course as a graphic artist to hand draw a half-way passable Canadian flag: I bet 99 percent can't. I think the stylized trillium is only marginally better on that front.

Please, please, please do not run roughshod over my heritage. Ontario is the fabulous place it is today because of the foundation of British laws, commerce, administration, the rule of law, stoicism, individual rights and freedoms, indeed a stiff upper lip and heritage which created the environment which other cultural groups have found the attaction of living in it and thrive. WHY TO WE NEED THESE ANACHRONISTIC AND RIDICULOUS SYMBOLS THAT ONLY SERVE TO DIVIDE US?!
