FIRST STEAM IN TUNNEL 2 IN 68 YEARS
The Virginia & Truckee Railroad's Virginia City line was abandoned in
1938 twelve years ahead of total abandonment on May 31, 1950. The last
steam train to run on these tracks was the #25 as part of the salvage
operation in 1941. Sadly the rails were pulled and sold to the
Japanese government just ahead of the US entry into WWII against
Japan. I've often assumed cynically that the rails were melted and
made into armaments, but perhaps those old V&T rails still serve
somewhere in the Japanese rail system.
That's old history. Today Tom Gray's Virginia & Truckee Railroad made
some new history. In preparation for the Engineer's Special on the 15th,
a private group rode down the new tracks behind the #29 steam
locomotive. In the consist was the Gold Hill car, recently acquired
from the Green Bay, Wisconsin National Railroad Museum. The car has
been refurbished and will be used for the 2009 season. Also in the
consist was Tom's Mom's pink and green parlor car.
We were bit by the darkness and didn't plan fully for it.
Videos shot on the 15th will be much, much better. We Promise.
