Cunard's Queen Victoria was due to leave Southampton Docks on her maiden voyage, so I went out on my boat to see her leave & watch the fireworks.
This video shows the QV leaving her mooring & the firework display, as seen from my boat a couple of hundred yards across the water

  • Hi ZeroGal5, it really was a historic moment, just a shame these low-res videos here don't really capture how exciting it was to be so close to such a wonderful ship as she left for her maiden voyage - she was towering above us when that horn went off !!! ;-)

  • Yeah i thought it may have been a nice loud horn, i remember the Saphire Princess leaving here, Hobart, Tasmania, a few years ago, and she had a dissapointingly quiet horn, i couldnt believe such a large ship having this pathetic party whistle, i dont know if they can adjust them or not. Anyway, thanks mate, great video, please post some more if you can.

Happy New Year to you and your family :)

  • Hey aggablinky, thanks very much for your kind comments, much appreciated ! I'll try to take some more footage of the QV close up, in daylight this time, in 2008. Happy New Year to you & yours. Regards, Paul.

  • Excellent video, thanks, mate, was the horn really loud when your actually near her?

  • Horn, Loud, you are joking ??!!! QV's horn nearly blasted us out of the water !!! LOL. It was amazing. It was just incredible to the human eye & EAR. I found a little backwater of shallow water, about 3M deep, so had to be a bit careful about grounding my boat, but we wanted to be close to QV as she left her berth. We didn't get even bothered by her 10 ton brass nuts turning away in the water. Cheese, Paul.

  • I will never forget this sight for the length if my life. Absolutely amazing. QV, wondefuk.

  • Wow, it must be amazing to have experianced this historical moment. Thanks for sharing it with us. :)

  • I love how the English take such pride in their ships. I wish we did displays like that more often for new ships. ^^
