@francesarabelle Nope, I did not hire an attorney. Most people don't; it's generally kind of overkill. The forms are simple enough to figure out, and for the few questions I had, I just asked people online (on trans message boards, etc.) for help.

@francesarabelle I did have to change my school info. Fortunately, that process was easy - I just took a copy of my name change paperwork to the registrar's office, and they handled it from there.

why do you have to list it on the newspaper? sorry for the annoying questions lol

@wencesbahena I don't know, it's just a requirement that California and some other states have. I think it's a way of making sure that you're not trying to escape debt. In CA you have to list a notice of your name change in an approved newspaper for four consecutive weeks before your court date.

Can you change your SSN once you change your name?

@wencesbahena I paid around $350 for the court filing fee, plus about $120 to have it listed in the newspaper for four weeks. I think the fees depend on what county you're filing in, though.
