ive had shimano ultegra sti shifters on my racing bike for a year now and i haven't had any problems with frayed, jamed or snaped cables.
and my daily road bike which i use every day has tiagra and there has been no problems

I got rid of anything Shimano. It worked fine, but had trouble with the shift cables wearing out. One broke in less than 6 months. Had to replace the rear shifter because it jammed it anf broke it. Sorry, but this shifter is a very poor design.

I just use the old saddle, bar and seatpost. It keeps my build costs reasonable while allowing me to get all of the good gear.
