  • @weemagicstane I dunno......thatcher started it but she only wanted to close a few pits, not all of them, because they were uneconomical. The NUM and scargill did not like this and took all the pits out on strike. This meant the industry was not working at capacity and was rapidly losing money so more and more pits closed. don't get me wrong i don't like thatcher but the way scargill handled it didn't help. You a miner or part of that industry, just interested.

  • @pyro999maniac Naw. That was Thatcher, the Tories and subsequent governments that destroyed the mining industry - as well as the steel industry and British manufacturing industry in general.

Arthur and the NUM fought to defend the mining industry and the communities it sustained.

  • this man destroyed our industry

  • deathunions huh? you might as well say death death to history!

  • Your right socialism is dead. Now we have New Labour and a new Conservative Party who have abandoned their principles just as Labour has. Yes you won, you broke the miners spirit, destroyed the coal industry and the towns surrounding them. All they wanted was to keep their jobs to earn a living. Even though I hate capitalism I was glad the Government bailed out the banks so the economy wold live to fight another day.You had your victory but is this the society we aspired for.

  • Yes I do speak on behalf of many people based on election results since 1979 - but you dont answer the question do you - seriously I feel this is one of the main points why trade unions / socialism have done nothing at the ballot box in many years - but dont worry I wont expect any proper answer from you.

  • And now you speak on behalf of the British people too?

    I don't think so.

  • Dear Mr Scargill what is the point of a coal industry if the NUM go on strike on a regular basis and distrupt supplies - yours the people of the UK.
