  • I give her credit for such a magnanimous musical choice. The Miraculous Mandarin is probably one of the most important 20th century works next to A Survival of Warsaw by Schoenberg

  • I think this program is brilliant. It's edgy, very innovative. I just love how the critics dumped on it because it was different from everything else she had done, when that was what they wanted from her.

I wish she'd had more time with this program. It would've been great, well received I think under COP.

  • This program is a masterpiece.

  • @USAGymnast Ohh, totally. Scheherezade had great potential but it went wrong even with the cut of the music she made. It was strong in the beginning but too slow on a long second part.

It's a shame Michelle decided not to stick with this program It could had been a total depart for her.

  • @skatefan9495 I feel that 5.5 is correct. The base mark for this program's technical merit should have been 5.9. The mistakes she made on the first two jumping passes merit a .3 deduction, IMO, and then you have to take another .1 off for the singled Axel. She deserved a very high presentation mark, though. This very unique program is made all the more enthralling by Kwan's exquisite qualities and would have merited a 6.0 if performed more cleanly. I would have given 5.9 for this performance.

  • But I would have given her 5.9 on presentation.

  • @Zuranthium I think the judges gave her credit for trying the 3-3, even if it was 2-footed. I think 5.6 would have been about right.

  • Forgot how GOOD this program was ! Ashamed she didn't hang on to this one .

  • @Arinozian I don't understand this personally. I thought she was very into it. The opening expression and movements were so fierce, the footwork after the triple salchow perfect, the part in the middle where she holds her hand out seductively and wriggles her shoulder with that sexual look on her face, that's extremely rare for michelle. I would've wanted even more choreographic elements but as a bare bones piece that was only a few weeks old the program was brilliant.

  • That dress is beautiful, she should have worn it for her "Song of the Black Swan" program too!

  • Michelle did the same with Rush, ditching it after a few performances because the response was tepid from judges and some fans. She went back to East of Eden and all was well.

IMO, up to 2004, all of Michelle's music choices were unique and not done before or rarely done before.

  • Michelle ditched the program because of the negative reaction from the judges, fans, and her coach. It was only two weeks old and IIRC, worlds were only 2-3 weeks away and Frank convinced her to go back to Song of the Black Swan.

What was ironic was the moaning within the skating world of what they considered a "safe" Kwan program. So when she went full on outside the box, they all bemoaned it. Peggy Fleming and Peter Carruthers commentated and both pissed on the choice of music.
