  • I didn't make the CIWS... I just happened to be on the ship and made the video. I don't care who developed it. Standing as close as I was able to that weapon was awesome and the video speaks for itself.

  • @waverly2468 Yes. It was designed specifically to shoot down sea-skimming cruise missles, among other things, along with later improvements in the Block 1A and Block 1B to be able to engage supersonic sea-skimming cruise missles.

  • 4 Chinese sailors disliked this.

  • can i make the tatoo with this ?

  • Okay--this thing is awesome--but has it EVER successfully shot down a sea-skimming missile, even in a test?

  • I admire this gun but during my summer cruise on CVN-77 they had a test firing and I almost fell from my bunk. If I hadn't won the pilot slot I would've requested to be put on one of these.

Did some research as you suggested. The original CIWS was developed by General Dynamics and was evaluated on the USS King in 1973. It was accepted for production and produced in 1978 and was fitted to the USS Coral Sea in 1980. The Goalkeeper was designed in 1975 (working with General Electric who supplied the GAU-8 weapon). A prototype was demonstrated to the royal netherlands navy in 1979. The system entered service in 1980. BTW, the GAU-8 is the same weapon used on the A-10.

  • @Prw07731 OOPS! Got the names of the cruises mixed up. I'm sure you know what trying say --cuz I don't

  • @Prw07731 Just realized you were "Tiger-Cruzing" -- I'm jealous that the Phalanx was invented during my Tiger Cruise. Just to stand close to this beast....WOW. I was on the aircraft carrier CV-64 US CONSTELLATION for both the Tiger Cruise and the Dependence Day Cruise (1982- Hawaii to San Diego) for a week --took that long to explore. I was known as "machine gun joe" because I would blow thru clips & ammo shooting the M-16 and M-60 off the fantail on the carrier. GOOD TIMES!
