8mm film source video from the 2nd 1972 benefit concert, this one at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York, December 23.
Grand Funk Railroad donated all the profits to the Phoenix House -a drug rehabilitation center- to demonstrate their feelings against hard drugs.
The band's prior producer / manager Terry Knight showed up that afternoon -during the sound check- accompanied by his attorney, two sheriffs and a court order to confiscate all of the group's equipment, insisting that they owed him many million dollars!!! He even sued the tour promoter, the Madison Square Garden, the producer of the "In Concert" series Don Kirshner and the ABC TV for filming the show!!! But, fearing a riot by some 20.000 fans that night if they cancel the show at such late notice, they all came to an agreement (frustrating Knight...) The guys would perform and as their set was over, the equipment would be confiscated...
So, after Grand Funk's 90min. dynamic performance, three movers took everything, saved up for keyboardist who's stuff didn't belong to the band. (Craig Frost -an old friend from The Pack days- wasn't yet a regular member, as he joined the group about six months earlier, to help record the new Phoenix album and tour with them around the United States, for the homonymous 1972 tour)
Fortunately, In Concert taping session was a fact and about 45 mins footage of Mark, Don, Mel and Craig was broadcasted on ABC TV, in January 19 1973.
From 2003 all the "In/Rock Concert" episodes are in the Historic Films vaults in New York City, waiting in the obscurity... They say they had transferred all episodes (plus outtakes) to digibeta tapes...

  • GFR., vs. RHCP !?!

  • @smokytehbear That is true.. I dont hate pot heads..I got nothing against them,''And i don't know why i even said such a hateful thing? Sorry bout that.

  • @dannyhood66 I'm far from hating pot but in comparison with LSD its definitely not something you can just ingest on a daily basis and maintain sanity lol

  • @Antoni2u I always hated pot and pot heads..The good ole fashioned lsd was a lot better for me and everybody,'' Pot was slow boring and excepted..I hate pot even though it can make a lot of money in this poorly misguided country.

  • I don't know why critic's in the 70s compared grand funk railroad as being an americanized black sabbath,''Fucking stupid critics back then,''they never sounded like sabbath period.

  • great footage, thanks!

  • @JohninFunk Tanx, man! This answers a question I've had for decades.

  • If you weren't a teenager in the early 70's witnessing GFR, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Zep, Bad Co....... Its pretty tough to understand what it was like then. We would pile in a car, party our asses off and go to these things. In the concerts joints were passed around like nothing, everyone was toasted. After the concerts the crowds were crazy. Keep in mind, we were all 15 16 17 yrs olds partying with 60,000 other kids. Amazing time.

  • Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks. did not recognize the name. Mark always did go for the non mainstream guitars until his latest purchase. I could be wrong
