I really don't understand the bad ratings for this game.
Graphics were good for the time, the music - in my opinion - was brilliant, the gameplay was simply different and it was difficult in some parts.
Moreover, you can "play" with Death, sometimes he helps you killing your enemies. It's a game with a lot of playable possibilities.
Perhaps it's made only for Rare fans (Does somebody remember those 1881 barrels from Banjo-Kazooie?)
