Enhancing Rural Education/Business Connectivity: a New Model to Advance Workforce Development Opportunities

Because of rapidly advancing technology and international competition for goods and services, business partners face greater pressure to increase production and reduce costs. Better-prepared employees, which education partners produce, are a large part of solving this problem. How can education anticipate the workforce and training needs of local industry? What can business do to communicate the skills that are necessary to better prepare future employees?

This grant will focus on the creation of a workforce development communications model for Hardin County that can be replicated in other counties. The Hardin County Chamber Business Alliance identified the need to improve collaboration and communication between business and education as one of their primary goals for 2010. The grant team will work with the Alber Enterprise Center and the Hardin County Chamber to develop a web-based platform to connect resources and communicate opportunities to benefit youth, the unemployed, underemployed and future workforce. The project will survey/interview employers and educational institutions to identify opportunities, including internships and shadowing, that will help to orient workers to future jobs, particularly "green jobs," in Hardin County. The Hardin County Chamber Business Alliance will act as the lead organization on the local level with Frank Gibson at the Alber Enterprise Center acting as point person for the team.
