Australia's existing renewable energy options (wind, solar and geothermal) are unlikely to keep pace with demand as the new mandatory targets for industry are rolled out. Biomass options, particularly from native vegetation, present a sustainable way of adding to the available mix. Additionally, this approach has added benefits for farmers to diversify and generate an income in water-poor rural areas. It will deliver additional benefits to areas that are being impacted already by shifts in climate and associated rainfall patterns.
