Two officers were treated for stab wounds, and a man was killed after a 911 call on the morning of August 1, 2011.

Kilgore police received a 911 call from the 1200 block of East North Street. Officer DeeAnn Brown, 47, arrived at the scene and met a man in a driveway who she believed to be mentally unstable. The subject then produced a knife, Roberson said.

During a scuffle with the subject, Officer Brown was stabbed and Sgt. David Tucker, 54, who had arrived on the scene, was also attacked and stabbed.

During the struggle, one of the officers opened fire, striking the man, 19-year-old Jamel Joseph Freeman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Roberson said both Brown and Tucker were transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Freeman's relatives gathered at the site, and at one point, a shouting match between police and the gathered family members broke out, as seen in the video.

  • @miineybad903 Tasers have a 30% failure rate and only offer one shot before having to reload which takes a while, Knives work every time without the need to reload. In many cases knives are more effective than bullets because of the size of a slash wound. I agree things could have been done differently in the sense that this boy's family could have raised him to know stabbing people is wrong. Blame the loser parents, not the police.

  • @ninjarider84

he didn cut no body talk what you kno he was a good person

  • Ignorance is what I just heard, im in law enforcement, they teach us to shoot to kill not to wound, so he has a knife and they shoot him in the leg.......he keeps coming and then stabs and kills the officer, ya im so sure your nephew was such an angel.

  • If both Officers where close enough to get cut, they obviously tried to do it differently. They gave him a chance. The young man made a poor choice. My condolences to the family.

  • If they're in such grief over the loss of their "relative", then why are there people carrying on and laughing? Because of ignorance. That's why

  • fucc texas police if i could i woulda stabed em too, and white supremacist are texas police and they killed my uncle and his friend.............sorry for your lost

  • Let's see.....two officers were stabbed so obviously the defendant had a cutting instrument. The officers are not paid to be injured or killed. What did the family members expect the officers to do?? It's very sad that the young man died but let's keep perspective here.....the DEFENDANT was accountable for his own death!

  • Police officers are allowed to escalate one step above the current threat level of violence. The suspect had already entered at the highest level, lethal force, and had committed bodily harm to another person.

In essence, he brought a knife to a gun fight. In addition, the official press release states that the suspect INITIATED everything by calling 911 with a false report.

My verdict is "Suicide by Cop"

  • It doesn't matter if he was wrong or not they could have tazed him or anything else they didn't have to shoot him in the head he had a knife not a gun

  • Without a movie of the entire incident, no one will ever know the truth. To believe everything a cop says is as stupid as believing all convicted criminals are innocent.
