MaximsNewsNetwork: 27 January 2010: - WORLD BANK: Malawi - The Mpandunjozu School in rural Malawi serves more than 700 students from twenty villages.

For the past ten years, primary school in Malawi has been free, and there is plenty of demand for new classrooms, teachers even chalk.

As part of the Malawi Social Action Fund, established with help from the World Bank, workers have built new classrooms, dug bore holes for water and constructed new school latrines all over the country. The number of teachers has also increased, but some classes still have to take place outside and class sizes remain high.

One of the difficulties in rural areas is attracting qualified teachers. And keeping teachers in the classroom is especially difficult if they cant find a place to live nearby and must travel far every day to get to and from work.

SOUNDBITE (English) Willard Chimwoza, Deputy Head, Mpandunjozu School:
Some teachers have to travel 80 kilometers every day so its better to consider those teachers that are coming from far away to get to the school.

MASAF, the governments Social Action Fund, is now concentrating on building teachers houses right by the schools.

SOUNDBITE (English) Goodwill Gondwe, Minister of Local Government, Malawi:
MASAF comes in and helps in building these houses, providing the cement, the iron sheets for roofing and the expertise with regards bricklayers and so forth Mpandunjozu School has just completed its first house and has plans for at least two more.

With this focus on education, Malawi is on track to have 90 percent of children complete at least five years of education by 2015. And in some districts such as this one, it could well be 100 percent ...............................................................................................................
