Vietnamese fought for their independence above everything. It's regrettable that the communists took over and led the nat'l liberation struggle. But if the Americans had allowed the Vietnamese to gain independence after the French left, this would not have happened. The South was led by totally corrupt politicians and unpopular ex-military officers who were taking orders from the US. Naturally, non-communist patriots of the South turned to the Vietcong.
