pete bad guitarrist?
sure,he's not the best lead guitarrist...
but at least have heard his solos in live at leeds?is a very good lead guitarist
and one of the best showmans in the history of rock..no matter the speed or difficulty, the thing of really mattaers is the feeling and pete has

@espdemon i agree wholeheartedly...however, live at leeds has him in fine lead form. There are other examples of his good lead playing. Sometimes i don't get it. He can play great at times and other times he is horrible w/his single note work. He hits bad notes and seems to fly by the seat of his pants..

Couldn't of said it better my self man!! :)

damn pete, the years have done you well

i think pete said that the boys in the 80s moved faster then his fingers could to catch them

Saying Pete Townshend is a good guitarist is ignorant.
A good guitarist is well rounded...Pete is not.
Fantastic songwriter, great rhythm guitarist, great rock & roll icon...but to say he's a good guitarist is like saying Frank Sinatra had a good voice.
-
@asmorgan88 I agree, he can lay down a good rythm but why does he keep playing terrible leads? I just don't get it. And what's even worse is that fans have no idea what a good solo is these days. Townsend needs to stick to rhythm and rhythm only. For all of you people who think Townsend can play lead, A) You know nothing about guitar playing B) Listen to Led Zeppelin,Pink Floyd or Deep Purple and compare that to Townsend.

I think he's a fantastic rhythm guitarist...but a fucking horrid lead guitarist...
He's one of my favorites too...but I'm not enough of an asshole to say his solos are fucking good, or even decent.

@nucleardude11 Wrong, You're just being bias. Cobain was basically about aggressive guitar playing like townsend and both of them could never solo well. Cobain sucked at it and so did Townsend, the thing is, Cobain could have gotten better because he died so young, Townsend has sucked at soloing his whole long career.

@asmorgan88 I agree, Pete Townsend and guitar solo should never be in the same sentence.
There's a difference between 'shredding' and playing lead.
Townshend's lead lines are all carefully considered and approached in a way that they will serve the song, rather than serve the guitarist's ego. I think Pete once said, regarding the heavy metal players of the 80s, that 'their fingers move faster than their brains'.
Pete played jazz before he played rock, so he learnt how to improvise in a thoughtful way.

He was never as much of a fret-wanker as so many of his contemporaries were. A super-charged flamenco guitarist, is what he was.
