Although almost forgotten today, The Four Aces (not to be confused with the 1950s Pop Group or another group of the late 1930s) were quite popular at their time and recorded more than 30 titles for Columbia and Paramount in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The group consisted of: Charlie Anderson, Al Perry, Joe Markese, and Dennis Finnegan.
The Hawaiian Guitar Sound was quite popular with the record buying public at this time, and The Four Aces main claim to fame might be their 1929 recording in which they introduced a song called "Blue Hawaii". On many of their recordings, only three of the four guitarists are singing, and their Paramount recordings were released as "The Cardinal Trio".
The recording of the song heard here was one of the many versions recorded by an array of vocal artists and dance bands. It was made Popular by Winnie Lightner who first performed the song in the Warner Bros. All-Talking, All-Singing, All-Technicolor Musical Sensation "Show of Shows" which was released to compete with MGM's All-Talking, All-Singing Musical Extravaganza entitled "Hollywood Revue of 1929".
This recording was made in Columbia's New York Recording Studio on November 22, 1929.
