i got a question....if someone could answer it, originally from yahoo
Q is:
Interesting bit of reporting here (trust Yahoo!) This 3.9 strength quake, measured on the richter scale - But here's the connundrum......
This report then cites earlier quakes measuring: 4.3 in 1750; 4.5 in 1754; and 5.0 in 1878.
How could those earlier quakes be compared when the Richter scale didn't exist until Mr. Richter invented it in 1935?
& in other countries report rechter scales hundreds of yrs ago??? confused

The Richter scale is not used in seismology anymore.

@boredandwise 12.5? isnt tht the mordern merchalli scale? O_o

The biggest "earthquake" so to speak, that we know of, happened on a magnetar about 50,000 light years from earth in 2004. Scientists estimate (that if you could measure this on the Richter scale) would come in at a whopping 32. Pretty amazing stuff.

but how does the acyual device work?

8.9... which was what Japan had just suffered from today...

00:20 That is incorrect. In 1960, Chile experienced a 9.5 earthquake. In 1964, Alaska experienced a 9.2. There are a few others that were larger than 8.9.
8.9 is still no joke, though.
