European Skateboarding Championships Basel 2010 - ESC Thursday

The 10th edition of the etnies European Skateboard Championships presented by Carhartt ended with an unbelievable final in street with ten amazing skateboarders. One of them was youngster Gard Jenssen Hvaara from Norway, who went all the way from the Junior Champs into the finals and ended on the 9th place. Axel Cruysbergh from Belgium, who you can also see "Eating Cake with" on the etnies Europe site and who was last year's winner in street and miniramp earned street's second place. In third came Kilian Heuberger from Germany doing nose bluntslides down the rail and pole jams on the birthday cake-obstacle. This year's winner is Nassim Guammaz from the Netherlands doing big back 360's down the double set.
Aside from the street finals, the 8000 spectators who came to Basel over the weekend to celebrate ESC's anniversary with us could witness Phil Zwijsen ruling the mini ramp with nice flow and endless lines, taking a well deserved victory. Also, Freddy Austbo came out to show his face, coming back from a long stint of being sidelined by injuries, taking second place right away, and a surprising Symon Stachon from Poland taking third.
Girl's Jam was won by Ianire Elorriaga from Spain, who had already succeeded getting this title six times in it is ten years of existence. Second place went to Aura Brédat, third to Candy Jacobs from the Netherlands.

This ten year anniversary edition of etnies European Skateboard Championships (ESC) in Basel, presented by Carhartt, once again had all takes for superlatives: more than 400 starters from 20 nations and a sold out "Kunschti". Thus, the stage was perfectly set for a befitting celebration, the course's design with birthday cake-styled ramps and organizer Oli Bürgin's clown's dress were a perfect fit.
On Thursday, the new blood opened the event with the Junior Champs. The junior's top ten were previledged to advance to men's qualification on Saturday. On Friday the 180 starters in street were battling for the coveted spots in Saturday's semi-finals. In the evening it was up to the Lombego Surfers to make the crowd go nuts, at their live-gig in front of the mini ramp, and ultimately climaxing in a heated skate-session at infamous Black Cross bowl and a premier of Pontus Alv's new movie "In Search Of The Miracolous", followed by more skating-action until the wee hours.

Saturday was all about street-action, plus the prequalification in miniramp. As the night's definite highlight Carhartt and etnies presented the official ESC-anniversary party at Kaserne, where as a main-act world-renown DJ Shadow was spinning the turntables. Sunday started out -- according to the occasion -- by eating birthday cake: Willow and other familiar faces were enjoying the sweetness. That done, the finals were ready to kick off: starting with the girl's Jam, the mini and finally street. All throughout, announcer Schützi was cheering at his best, letting the crowd in the stands go berserk until prices were given and best-trick -- where reckless riders could fill there pockets with cash handed out by Oli Bürgin in his clown's suit rewarding tricks done down rail or double set -- was done.

Thus, this chapter of ESC was closed. Ten years of thrilling events lie behind us, in which skateboarding has been pushed a bit further each time a new and has been celebrated in proficient and pleasurable Swiss-style.
