In this video I demonstrate the effect of using different levels of diffusion panels in video lighting outdoors.

The three main tools for controlling light outdoors for video are:

1. Diffusion panels
2. Reflectors
3. Scrims

This video is all about diffusion panels so you can see the effect and how it changes the light on your subject outdoors.

  • @hooptyndablowfish You're right that the subject would also get too dark. A black net behind the subject could also do the trick though...

  • Could you also use a neutral density filter in order to keep the background from blowing out or would that cause the subject to become to dark?

  • @larry50 I've never had that happen, but they're only aluminum so I could definitely see that being a possibility.

For dealing with heavy winds, the heavier options from companies like Matthews are a better option. Of course, they're much heavier, so it's a trade-off.

  • I knew someone that used that brand, and a strong wind broke it.
