Comedian and ex Monty Python John Cleese and actress Elizabeth Hurley investigate why women wear make up and talk to pyschologists about the links between eye-liner, lipstick and sex. Fascinating short video from BBC science show 'The Human Face'. Contains strong language and adult themes.

  • Women wear make-up to portray an image of health. ie. flawless skin, red lips, red cheeks - simulates healthy circulation. It may even be a display of fertility, as is suggested towards the end of the video. i.e. other primates display reds and pinks when sexually active, hence a possible reason many women are drawn towards those colours. Its all quite primitive - as is the man's attraction to it.

  • hey hey hey,

not all of us wear makeup.

  • Women wear makeup because it makes us look and feel better. There is no complex answer on that the majority of women are insecure and resort to wearing makeup. I find it hilarious when men say they prefer natural girls. You have no idea what natural is. Makeup is an illusion and yes it can be decieving.

  • @proteoid mind if i quote you? i love what you have said here.

  • Q: why do weman wear make up and perfume? A: because they're ugly and they smell.

  • There are some women who have many excuses as to why they wear makeup. I prefer natural. I find it amusing that they say men are hiding behind facial hair. They try to make it sound right but it's foolish. The one logical thing that they are either not understanding or just refusing to is facial hair in men is natural. It just grows. Makeup is store bought and applied. Makeup is hiding. A psychological mask. Growing a beard isn't.

  • but i dont wear make up at all... (unless its for a wedding, i wear a tiny bit)

not that i think my skin is perfect or anything... i just dont like it and if i had it i wouldnt really know how to use it.

  • @chelsyelise no... but i can kinda see that.

He is the guy from the monty python, and a bunch of UK sit coms like faulty towers and stuff.

  • Elizabeth Hurley is beautiful...

  • 99% of men dislike it - including me - nobody needs it

  • you no saying that you prefer girls that wear no makeup, and saying that girls that wear makeup are fake, clowns and ugly really make girls that wear it feel even worse about themselves. Do you really wanna no the truth ????? WE WEAR IT SO PEOPLE WILL APPROVE OF US! makeup is finally a chance to be accepted. I'm not talking about lipstick and eyeshadow , I'm mostly talking about foundation and eyeliner. and if your a person that dosent need makeup up, keep it to yourselves.
