We already have a two-tier system....50% of U.S. health care is either VA or Medicare. As well, the canard that the uninsured in the U.S. do not receive health care is getting old and tired...it is simply not the case and promoting more govt. control to ease irrational fears can do nothing but further harm a system already trying to cope with the burden of govt. bureaucracy. 5% waste of HMO revenue on admin is and would be a godsend to the governmental bureaucracy in healthcare.

For all its faults, America still has a pretty damn good healthcare system, and it's STILL largely private! We do NOT have the worst system or even the 37th-worst. That crap came from an obviously biased WHO study where the people who conducted it were most assuredly pro-NHC, so one would assume that most nations at the top have NHC or UHC.

Yes because the need of people outside the US is much more important than the general population of the US who have no choice other than expensive corporate run health care.

Dear garrettroche, obviously you haven't thought this thing through. If the United States socializes its health care system, then where do Canadians, Americans and Mexicans go for treatment if they don't like the "free" care offered by their government?

Canadians need to stop being complacement and demand an END to national health insurance! It's only screwed things up! Hell, even the Conservative Party is pro-NHC. It's a fucking disgrace. How's that for "conservative." Someone needs to step up and wake up the Canadians and the British to the failures of their systems.

The example of going to the US for faster treatment is exactly what the extra-insured top tier patients would enjoy.

So what's the problem? Add up your health insurance premia, add what your employer contributes, and pay 80% is tax for universal coverage, and 20% to upgrade to private. You will find your annual healthcare bill falls! No wasted 5% denying claims,concentrated drug rate bargainning and fast treatment for the upper-middle classes with extra-private insurance.This works everywhere!

The two-tier system works.Healthcare from taxes,and if you are secure enough,you can upgrade with modest cost private insurance.The private insurance basically speeds up treatment and gets you a nicer private room at the hospital.Same Dr though! Nobody is not covered & yes there are clogs in a public system,but at least nobody dies in the HMO parking lot,removed for having no insurance!Of course you have to wait longer,just like the post office isn't very efficient either but a necessary staple!

Nobody wants a Govt monopoly as an alternative - It would be a two-tier system like the postal service - At the moment we have a healthcare system which is like private only mail, and USPS only does postcards. Over 5% of HMO revenues are consumed on admin trying to deny claims. Drug manufacturers also enjoy a fragmented HMO market, where one big bidder on drugs would be the Govt.

So drugmakers, HMOs and HC administrators benefit under the current system, while the uninsured give birth in ER.
