I remeber reading something about this in a scientific mystery journal in 1992. Bizarre and chilling too.

HOAX:
1. KLEE didn't go off air, it changed its callsign to KPRC.
2. American broadcasts cannot be viewed in Britain due to incompatibility.
3. Other stations received similar letters.

The call letters were available to a hoaxer. Radio/TV magazines used to print the call signs of stations newly on the air. I found the KLEE sign in a magazine around 1950. But I don't recall a particular person ever being identified with a hoax. One of the mystery photos was published in TV Guide around 1953-54.
