Bimtech celebrates an evening of soulful music with santoor maestro Pt.Shivkumar Sharma
If music is what feelings sound like then the audience at Bimtech would unanimously say that
Pt.Shivkumar Sharma's music not only delighted the soul but also uplifted spirit. On February
9,2011 Birla institute of management technology in collaboration with Spic Macay, organised an
evening filled with the magic of music with the doyen of santoor -Pandit Shivkumar Sharma who
graced the event with an enthralling performance.
The concert was organised by the cultural conduit of Bimtech in continuation of its tradition
of hosting such cultural events. The event was a part of the Spic Macay Fest-2011,dedicated to
Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekanand, Mother Teresa and Shri Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Bimtech
has always shown great zeal and vigour in organising such events with a mission of acquainting the
students with the richness and purity of Indian classical music who are otherwise much influenced
by the western ways of the world.
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma started the concert by playing 'raag yaman' which truly mesmerised the
audience with its melody. Mr. Ramkumar Mishra who was giving a splendid support by playing
tabla and Mr. Deepak Kalra who captivated the audience with his mastery of tanpura added to the
beauty of atmosphere created by the concord of santoor. Together it sounded like a perfect blend
of music which not only relaxes the mind but is also soul soothing.
The fact that santoor is now not only a regular instrument in the Indian classical music, but also
the most popular instrument among the aspiring artists, is due to the persistent efforts of Pandit
Shivkumar Sharma. He made changes in the physical structure of the instrument by modifying it into
an instrument of 91 strings, which traditionally consisted of a 100 strings.
The concert lasted about 2 hours and spell bounded the audience throughout. It was an enchanting
to experience the presence of such a personality and listen to his expertise and mastery of santoor. Dr H Chaturvedi Director Birla Institute felicted Pt Sharma after hsi soulful renderings.
