Filming Legolas "shieldboarding" down the stairs in Helm's Deep. This is Orlando Bloom's stunt double, not Orlando himself.

@Latinchica1994 If you read the comments, what ended up in the film is almost entirely Orlando. This is when they were trying to see if they could do it without risking him.

@TheDecrescent He ended up doing it himself, after they tried this and realised it wouldn't really work. I think only a split second of the shot of the stunt double is in the film.

@marburg666 It was a very tricky gag though, a lot of balance involved. Wires don't make it easy, they just make it not fatal. Also Orlando didn't get as much practice as the double did. In fact the whole gag was Orlando's idea to begin with so it makes sense that he would want to do as much as he could himself! The double ended up doing the start without wires on a shorter staircase, you can see that in the movie when Legolas first jumps onto the shield and slides off the stairs.

@unstrungzero Well actually the first shot was a rehearsal, you can see no heads on urukhai. The second go was a good take, he swings out because that was the end of the rig and the shot was finished. The third go was a tighter shot with the firing action only and again reaching the end of the flying rig, hence the swing out. The double did it in 3 takes, Orlando tried for 1.5 hours. In the end they just used mostly head shots of Orlando above the stairs without the shield at all. :)
