  • Every time I watch this I cry... Because I can understand.

  • all ill say is this as a person of depression. that inner strength is important no matter others views on the subject. i been to a few shrinks and i can tell you they only do so much to help you. in the end your life has meaning even if you don't think so.

  • @Rowanffe From who? Misato's the only one who even TRIED to help Shinji, and she ended up failing due to her own crippling issues. Ritsuko's too busy persuing her own interests to give a fuck about anyone else, Asuka's....well....Asuka, Rei doesn't understand emotion, so she'd be no help, Gendo's actively trying to make shinji's mental state WORSE and no-one else realises that anything's up with him. Well, except Kaoru, but we all know how well THAT turned out....

  • @psychicllamakiller I wouldn't say its impossible, its just much better if you decide to get help. But coming back to Evangelion, Shinji had plenty of help from everyone.

  • @Rowanffe But you cannot do this without someone else's help if you're depressed. It is physically impossible. You need outside help in order to get out of depression.

  • @psychicllamakiller I think we'll have to agree to disagree. Noone else can change your percetion on life, because its YOUR perception. People can help you discover things that may lead to a logical conclusion for you, which aids in helping cure your depression. A trained psychiatrist or psychologist would understand this and attempt to create various other perceptions for a person after finding out the complexities of their persona. Attempting to help them from the void that is their depression

  • @Rowanffe Support from your loved ones and/or a therapist sometimes isn't enough. Support from yourself alone is NEVER enough, because it is impossible. At best, it will do nothing and at worst, it will be counterproductive. You cannot force yourself to like yourself when you have a mental illness that totally screws up your perception of yourself and stops you from feeling able to be happy.

Look, ANY way of curing depression that doesn't involve a trained therapist is unrealistically easy.

  • @psychicllamakiller I wasn't aware that depression had a universal definition of its processes? Im pretty sure there are different levels of depression and that each person deals with it in a unique way. Support from friends and loved sometimes isnt enough. Its a battle with ones self, that much is clear to anyone whos had depression. I just think if you considered shinji's situation and looked at it from another perspective, you might appreciate it more. You seem to think it was easy for him.

  • @Rowanffe Ok....the problem with this scene is how depression works. Getting out of depression is a looooong, uphill slog, and it requires outside emotional support, whether it be from a doctor, friends, family, or all of the above. You cannot have a revelation that allows you to escape your depression all on it's own, ESPECIALLY when your depression has spent the last god-knows-how-long getting worse and worse, and you're very close to a nervous breakdown by the time the revelation comes along.

  • @psychicllamakiller this anime lasted longer than 20 seconds. It was a learning experience for him. Nerve, Evas, friendship, love, confrontation, battles etc. Being exposed to all these things helped him understand who he is and realise what he thought was not the only reality. These last few minutes are the climactic resolution he had been striving for. Noone said he's perfectly happy, he just knows that he wants to exist even in a world thats filled with horror, because there is good as well.
