I agree with the comments of Praise for her and she was 59 years old here! She sang long and well. I heard her in Recital about this time and even later in 1993 in Grant Park, Chicago and she was amazing in her early 60's then. One concert that I remember quite well I attended was with her mentor Jan Peerce in Los Angeles in 1968 at the big Music center and they where in great voice, Peters with her mentor Peerce, a night to remember.
roberta peters was an exceptional lyric coloratura, i agree with you totally! but katnleen battle even if she behaved well,, never had the exceptional upper range or coloratura ability of roberta peters. i believe battle really needed to be fired from her fille de regiments at the met, because this real bel canto workout was taxing her technique and small voice. this repetoire which demands a strong middle and extended upper register, must have fond her wnating in rehersals!
this seems to be a televised pefromance from the new jersey arts center, does anyone know if video of the cabaletta is around? would luv to of hear what peters did with it, since here singing here of the cavatina is so wondeful!
Thanks so much for your validation. In my opinion, Peters was the best singer of her kind at the Met. She never attempted anything her light and beautiful voice couldn't handle. She had plenty of repertoire, in Italian, French, and German, and she handled everything with great distinction. She's left a legacy of beauty, dignity, and artistic dignity. Kathleen Battle, with a similar voice, never had the artistic discipline and professional integrity that Roberta Peters had. A real artist!
I COMPLETELY AGREE with everything you just said. I also have a deep respect for her ability to self restrain as far as choosing roles. I think extending your shelf life as a singer is directly linked to choosing appropriate repertoire. And that in and of itself is a skill. Many great singers are either not self aware, or think that choosing other repertoire would make them more marketable, or they think they're invincible. I only wish I were alive to see her at the Met twenty years ago.
@MariaAntoinetteF You have to understand she made her Met debut at 18. She's been singing for 41 years at this point.

If you have never heard her toss of Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos......find the recording! Best ever besides Reri Grist.
