i'm torn. this is great, and we all knew it, but we need to hang on to music education for its own sake, not JUST for the sake of improving math and science scores. every society for all time had music as part of its culture and it tells the history.
if i want to get into a music education program in universty which is the smarter way to go? go in with tenor sax somethign i've played and know really well or go in with bassoon, something i just started but mi teacher told me to go into univerisyt with bassoon
As a future Music Teacher, this video makes my day. Not to say I haven't already heard all of this before, but people need to know. School's everywhere are cutting music and art programs to help funding in schools, but what they aren't realizing is that the arts are a VITAL supplement to education as a whole.
I have to do a persuasive speech about a topic. I chose music in school and the development of the brain, but I could not find much material on cutting music from school. This video has reestablished my belief in the topic and I am going to use this video as a visual aid.
Music should be taught in order to increase math scores? Where's the video that says we should teach math to increase out musicianship? Music has more profound intrinsic values than this video reveals. Why not teach music so that we can become more musical? This research is incredibly questionable and much has been published since this trend began back in the 1990's. Don't mean to be a downer...but music is more important than including it in a curriculum for its value on math education.
I totally agree with you in theory. And your argument for the intrinsic value of music is the most valid one. However, when making a case to administrators and school districts who fund music, advocates must not rely on just arguing music's intrinsic value as it means little to some narrowly focused "educators". For them, the video here is one they can relate to and appreciate. And in the end, the result is what matters - more music in our schools.
I dunno how I could ever live without my music classes! We're lucky enough to have plenty of funding and some of the best teachers in the country! I want to be an orchestra teacher so no kid ever has to go without music classes.
