These Locomotives were also used on the Long Island railroad too during the 1920's and up until world war two I believe.

I believe they were first designed by PRR to bring trains into Penn Station through the new (1910) tunnels from Jersey. See excellent book by Jonns "Conquering Gotham."

There was a steam generator to provide heat to the passenger cars and it also provided steam for the whistle.
