Demonstration video of the issue I am having with 12 function cycle computer made by Schwinn. Speed sensor is properly installed, yet won't read above about 27mph.

Product claims on package to work to 99.9mph, which is just shy of 1300 rpm with a standard 26" bicycle tire.

In practice, however, I am finding that the unit fails to register the speed properly at anything over about 940 rpm. If the unit did work as advertised, I could expect to see at least 38mph on the speedometer before any erroneous outputs began.

  • I have the same bike computer and i have had it up to 37mph going downhill, so it will definitely read above 27mph. Take it back and get a new one.

  • the problem is that the spedometer youre using is a bike spedometer. trust me i know because i own that exact same BIKE SPEDOMETER, i have it on my bike. try using an analog spedometer if possible.

  • its cause of the size of the wheel its too small for this purpouse

  • If you put the magnet up to the sensor by your ear, you can hear a click signifying a mechanical system inside. If you think about it, as the sensor goes by so fast repeatedly the mechanical component in the sensor does not have enough time to flip back and forth.

  • I planning the same thing. I'm afraid also, that RPM for sensor is not good enough. There is 2 ways to solve this - either the sensor itself is slow (afterall it's mechanical contacts affected by magnet) or the computer is slow. comp. could be tested out by using a controlled signal generator.

    Anyways it's smarter to put the speedo meeter on the rear axle, since the spinning radius is much smaller - time magnet affects the sensor is also alot longer.Also using stronger magnet would help maybe

  • you need a speedo with a higher refresh rate (better quality). As the guys below said it's because your wheel is so small. You could always just get a cheap gps unit. some of the old ones that don't have maps did have speedometers built in and aren't much bigger than that speedo unit. Just a thought.

  • I have one on a 4ft windmill blade and after 155 MPH it appeares to run backwards. Because of the 4ft diameter, I needed to move the decimil point one place.

  • your magnent is passing by the sensor so often that its blurring the reading

  • could be due to vibration at higher rpms of the kart wheel. i'm sure bikes are less "violent". how do you calibrate it to that size wheel?
