April 1st, 2011 - Paul, Peter, Chris, Will, Hobie
Started hiking down right before dawn around 6:45 am. Sign said to wear crampons. Not necessary but there was Ice on the first 1/2 mile of trail. At river by 10:45. Plenty of hydration with water available on the Bright Angel trail. Relaxed for 20 minutes. It is normally 20 degrees warmer at the bottom compared to the top of the canyon. It was supposed to be a high of 85 at the bottom that day. It was 94 degrees by 11:30. We each had about 80-90 oz of fluids for hike back up the South Kaibab ( no water on that trail). I would not do it again with less than 100 oz. I definitely would not be eager to hike this again at that level of heat closer to summer. We needed to be out by sunset at 6:45. We made it out around 5:15 pm. If you are not an experience hiker in great shape, do not attempt this. Chris is active duty US Army and runs marathons and even he was exhausted.
