You guys are half right, and half wrong!!! Itachi was the good guy because he was sent by Madara to kill the clan because the clan was planning to overrun Konoha, but he couldn't kill Sasuke, but couldn't tell him the mission because it was confidential. In the future, he wants Sasuke to get stronger so that he won't die as easily. In the end, Itachi was injured really badly because Madara took took his Sharingan and Sasuke was going to kill Itachi, but found out about the truth! *sigh* there.

Sasuke didn't kill anything in this fight Zetsu explains somethings off about Itachi and how he was loosing should of been impposible and Madara lit. told Saske if Itachi even in that sick state could of won and told Sasuke "Sorry buddy your not as strong as you think". Plus think about who has been suffering the most all this time while sasuke's getting drunk off power and revenge Itachi's living with all that guilt and weight over him.

Itachi died cause he believed Sasuke is good and he gave him Power , He gave power to Naruto too, so he could return Sasuke and turn him good ^^
