13 February 2009 - It's been over 80 years since the last shark attack in Bondi's world famous beach, however at around 7.30pm on the 12 February, 2009 a 33 year old male from the nearby suburb of Dover Heights was targeted by an unknown species of shark.
There was a flurry of surfers and people strolling the beach that came to assist.

One witness who was near the male when he was attacked immediately wrapped the victim's arm with a Boogie Board cord to prevent serious blood loss. The male's hand was severed with only a small amount of skin keeping the body part attached.

The quick actions of the nearby surfer and doctor that were strolling the beach no doubt saved the life of the male.

A large group of surfers all formed together to stretcher the male out on to the main road waiting for the ambulance and intensive care units to take over the medical treatment.

The quick thinking of all the people involved are to be commended on a fine life saving achievement.

The male was transported to St Vincent's hospital and underwent major surgery in an attempt to repair the damage.

It is understood the last shark attack in Bondi Beach was over 80 years ago. The surfers all seemed defiant in their interviews. Albeit a little shaken, they simply cant wait to get back in the water.

Freenews was first on scene, and is proud to bring you the most detailed photo and video coverage of this historic incident.

  • The police was there because they might need to arrest people that wanna go in the water and kill the shark or something!!:)

  • @SpaziYazi999

Police are there to offer any extra assistance, they are trained in first aid and are usually the first to the scene in most cases. They are there to maintain crowd control, so people don't get to close to the paramedics, the vehicles or anywhere that could cause extra harm.

  • why is the police there??? Is the shark gonna get arrested?!?!

  • @HaydenTheAwesomeOne Well obviously, no one's saying how dare those sharks attack us.
